Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) is a naturally occurring compound (a fatty acid amide) produced by cells in response to injury, stress, or inflammatory processes. It acts as an internal protective factor, helping tissues restore balance.
PEA is not a conventional painkiller; it works at the cellular level through several primary mechanisms:
- PPAR-alpha receptor activation: PEA binds to nuclear PPAR-α This triggers a signaling cascade that reduces the production of major pro-inflammatory compounds in cells.
- Entourage Effect: PEA slows down the breakdown of the body's own anandamide—the "bliss molecule"—which activates cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) and vanilloid receptors (TRPV1). This naturally enhances the body's internal defense against pain and stress.
