Long Dan Cao, Chinese Gentian (Gentiana Manshurica) is a perennial herb, 1 to 2 feet in height. Leaves are lower are small, , middle and upper leaves are lanceolate, with dark green top surface, 3 distinct veins, and no petiole. Tubular bell-shaped blue flowers grow on the tip of a branch. Fruits are oblong with numerous small seeds. Rhizome is short, yellowish brown or pale yellow, and clustered with many slender roots

Gentian root has a tonic, antipyretic effect, is used for anemia, lowers blood pressure. It is used as a means of improving digestion, relieves spasms of smooth muscles, stimulates the secretion of bile and contraction of the gallbladder, improves appetite, eliminates constipation, flatulence and heartburn. Due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Gentian has been successfully used to treat malaria.
