Apigenin is a flavonoid that naturally occurs in many plants and fruits. The highest mounts are found in parsley, chamomile, celery, vine-spinach, artichokes, and oregano, and the richest sources are in the dried forms. It is also abundant in chamomile tea. Drinks prepared from chamomile contains 0.8% to 1.2% apigenin (1).
For centuries chamomile tea has been used as a folk medicine remedy, both ingested or directly applied on the skin as a skincare solution. More recently, it has been indeed found by scientists that Apigenin is a powerful molecule with potential to modulate multiple intra cellular mechanisms.
The study of Apigenin has been extended beyond its relation with areas of health such as cognitive function, into oncology. As such, scientists have focused investigations on the relation of Apigenin with intracellular mechanisms such as ROS generation, Bcl-2, Bcl-xl, cell cycle phases, PI3K/Akt/mTOR, and MMP-9
