ThiAssist is designed to support the actions of thiamine at the cellular level and contains five minerals in their bioavailable form.
ThiAssist is designed to support the actions of thiamine at the cellular level and contains five minerals in their bioavailable form. This formula is intended to compliment supplementation with Thiamax or any other form of thiamine taken in higher dosages. This formula does not contain a full spectrum of minerals and should not be used to replace zinc, copper, iron, or any other trace mineral not included in this product.
Magnesium is a cofactor mineral necessary for the activity of thiamine-dependent enzymes (transketolase, pyruvate dehydrogenase, and alpha ketoglutarate dehydrogenase). Two varieties of magnesium with enhanced bioavailability are contained within ThiAssist. Magnesium malate is composed of malic acid, an organic acid involved in the production of cellular energy. Alternatively, magnesium taurate provides the amino acid taurine, which serves numerous roles including supporting antioxidant activity, electrolyte balance, and neurological function.
Potassium is another electrolyte mineral which may become low in thiamine deficiency states*. In the form of potassium citrate, this mineral serves the dual function of urinary alkalinization.
Molybdenum is a dietary mineral incorporated into the molybdate cofactor, which acts as a cofactor for oxidase enzymes including xanthine oxidase and sulfite oxidase. Sulfite oxidase plays an important processing of sulfur compounds, reducing the accumulation of the sulfite toxin and converting this into inorganic sulfate. Molybdenum may therefore be useful for improving sulfur metabolism. The molybdenum incorporated into this formula is bound with the amino acid glycine for improved absorption.
Selenomethionine provides the selenium mineral bound with the amino acid methionine, which is the main form found in foods. Selenium is necessary for the action of glutathione peroxidase, a critical enzyme utilized by the endogenous antioxidant system. Selenium is therefore useful in maintaining protection against oxidative stress and may also support health thyroid function.
Finally, ThiAssist also contains the manganese mineral in the form of manganese gluconate. Manganese is necessary for the activity of manganese-superoxide dismutase, a mitochondrial antioxidant. It also serves as a cofactor for a variety of other enzymes including Pyruvate carboxylase, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase, arginase, glutamine synthetase, prolidase, and glycosyltransferases. Earlier research highlighted a potential relationship between manganese and thiamine status, although this connection has not been well elucidated.
