Supports insulin function and glucose regulation.

D-chiro-inositol is a stereoisomer of inositol that plays a critical role as a second messenger mediating cellular responses to insulin. Embedded in cell membranes, D-chiro-inositol is part of a glycosyl phosphatidylinositol complex that is hydrolyzed into two bioactive molecules upon exposure to insulin. These molecules regulate glucose disposal by activating biochemical pathways in which glucose is either converted to glycogen for storage or oxidatively metabolized to produce energy. Studies indicate D-chiro-inositol is involved in proper insulin and glucose metabolism and may have a role in maintaining normal lipid profiles, cardiovascular function, and ovarian function. It may also help regulate inflammatory stress and modulate serotonin activity.

Although dietary inositol can be converted into D-chiro-inositol in healthy people, insulin-sensitive tissue of Type II diabetics and others may fail to make this conversion. D-chiro-inositol is found in some foods, but is often in low quantities and in a form that is poorly absorbed. In contrast, supplemental D-chiro-inositol has been shown to be bioavailable and to improve insulin sensitivity and glucose regulation. Klaire Labs D-Chiro-Inositol is naturally derived from carob pods and is recommended for persons who wish to support normal insulin function and protect against the harmful effects of sustained hyperglycemia.
