Artichoke (Cynara scolymus) is one of the most well-known plants for supporting liver function and the biliary tract, used as a mild hepatoprotective and metabolic agent.

Liver Support and Bile Flow

• Choleretic effect: stimulates the production of bile by the liver, which improves fat digestion and helps "flush" the bile ducts.
• Hepatoprotection: contains cynarin and silymarin (in lower concentrations than milk thistle), which help protect liver cells from toxic damage and promote their regeneration.

Important Precautions:

• Gallstone disease: this is the most important limitation. If you have large gallstones, taking artichoke can trigger their movement and cause an attack (biliary colic). Consultation with a doctor and an abdominal ultrasound are mandatory before use.
• Allergy: artichoke belongs to the Asteraceae (daisy) family. If you are allergic to ragweed, chamomile, calendula, or daisies, a cross-allergic reaction is possible.
• Biliary obstruction: artichoke is contraindicated in cases of complete blockage of the bile ducts.

Artichoke is an excellent remedy for a "gentle boost" to the liver and for improving digestion, especially when consuming heavy or fatty foods.

Suggested Adult Use: Shake well before use. 20-30 drops (1 ml., one full squeeze of dropper), up to 4 times a day or as directed by your practitioner. The best way to use liquid herbal tinctures / glycerites is to put the suggested amount in a glass of water, tea, or juice and drink the entire contents. Tinctures/glycerites can also be administered directly into the mouth without the assistance of water however some tinctures are unpalatable which is why most people prefer to dilute them into a beverage.
